Arguably, prior to the new JJ Abrams Trek, WOK was one of the few genuinely decent Trek flicks (I’d also add “First Contact”). Bringing back one of the great baddies from the Original Series, Khan Noonien Singh, gave the franchise the shot of nasty adrenaline missing from “Star Trek: The Motion Picture”. TMP was an interesting experiment in reviving an old property. You have to remember, before Trek, there was no precedent for bringing a old TV series to the big screen. The first movie was like the creative team learning to walk again, it was so consumed with awe-inspiring spectacle, it took the second film to get to the action the series deserved.

Nicholas Meyer, then a newbie to directing, but renowned writer ("The Seven Percent Solution") directs the film with the inspiration of a sea-faring adventure, a dogfight between two ship captains on the high seas, or two u-boat commanders engaged in an intergalactic chess match.   [ show more ]

Of all the Star Trek movies, I think the last fight scene in the Wrath of Khan is by far one of my favorites. I couldn't quite understand the Genesis project, which somehow led to Spock being reborn in Star Trek III.

Wrath is based on one of the best episodes of The Original Series of Star Trek. The episode, Space Seed, introduced Kahn Noonian Singh, a genetically engineered super-warrior from the 20th century who survived in cryogenic freeze until the crew of the Enterprise found his derelict space ship and revived him. Alas, his instinct to conquer survived as well, and only after an epic struggle is Kirk able to deposit Kahn and his band of supermen in permanent exile on a garden planet.

Fifteen years later, a cataclysm has left that planet barren, and Kahn bitter about his plight, when along comes the Enterprise, not knowing they have returned to Kahn's home planet. Kahn escapes and the game is on.

This is undoubtedly the best of the Star Trek movies, and in fact, the best of everything that was best about Star Trek TOS. There is heroism, epic conflict, a fully satisfying story, and deliciously over the top acting by Shatner, Nimoy and, the main course, Ricardo Montalban, reprising his original role, with all the menace and drama of, say, Sir Anthony Hopkins' Oscar winning turn as Hannibal Lechter.   [ show more ]
